ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IV

PROJECT 2: LIBRARY

Project Outline:

The Central Islip Library has elected to construct a new state-of-the art branch library building in order to serve newly constructed residential areas at the south end of the Town. The purpose of this project is to provide an educational and entertainment resource for their patrons as well as create community hub for all residents. The facility should include modern amenities and flexibility for future use. This project will involve design of a new building as well as development of the surrounding site.

CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS WITH DESIGN CONCEPT:

FLOOR PLANS:

I continued to design a building respecting the flow of the site to create a unique learning environment where the community can gather for any type of event.

To do this, I decided to design the library following the curve of the road. In respect to the site.

◦I designed the second story of my library following the curve of the road. This curve in the building, would also hang over the main entrance of the library giving a sense of definition to the entrance. I provided 2 rear entrances that connect to the multipurpose building and the outdoor space. These entrances would also be a direct path to the libraries parking lot.

◦Idea for multipurpose space-

◦Q: Why is it separate from the main building? A: I wanted to create a completely green building that can be self cooling and heated through a unique roofing system that I otherwise couldn’t have achieved if it was attached.

◦The use of similar materials of the two buildings and the distance apart (with the addition of an arbor connecting the two, would give the illusion that the building is still one.

◦The location of the multipurpose space also allows a separation of the outdoor space from the roads, creating a private outdoor area.

◦The back side of the multipurpose space has a sliding wall that can completely open to make the outdoor space and multipurpose space one big area.

◦No fixed furniture. This allows for different events to occur. Ex. Ballroom for dancing, gallery for art, stage for theater etc.…

ELEVATIONS:

FLOOR PLAN ANALYSIS:

The South and East façade have a simple rhythm of vertical and horizontal fin sunshades. This is because the building is aware of it's solar orientation.

All of the program spaces in the buildings have access to natural light and views.

The subtle bend in the buildings geometry not only signifies the entry, but it also assists in creating landscape spaces for people to enjoy outdoor seating.
